A consultant obstetrician manages the delivery. A maternity nurse manages the newborn. But the mother’s own recovery — the diastasis recti, the pelvic floor, the six months of altered biomechanics that follow a difficult delivery or a caesarean — is too often left to whoever the household can find on short notice. Increasingly, the households we work with are not waiting for that gap to appear. They are appointing a dedicated women’s health and post-natal physiotherapist before the birth, not after the problem shows up. For the wider scope of household physiotherapy, see Private Duty Physiotherapy for Private Families.
“A post-natal physiotherapist who arrives after six weeks of compensation patterns have set in is managing damage. One who is already inside the household from week one is managing recovery. Gulf principals increasingly understand the difference, and they are paying for the second model.”
Why this specialism sits inside Physiotherapists & Osteopaths, not Nursing
It is a common misconception among candidates that post-natal care is a nursing function. In a private family’s residence, the maternity nurse manages the newborn — feeding, sleep routines, neonatal observation. The mother’s own physical recovery is a distinct clinical discipline: pelvic floor rehabilitation, abdominal separation (diastasis recti) management, scar tissue mobilisation after a caesarean, and a graded return to activity. That is physiotherapy, delivered one-to-one, inside the residence, and it sits within our Physiotherapists & Osteopaths service line alongside elite performance and longevity rehabilitation work.
What the mandate actually covers
Across the live women’s health mandates on our desk, the scope is consistent: an initial assessment within the first postpartum weeks, a structured pelvic floor and core rehabilitation programme, manual therapy for caesarean scar mobility where relevant, and a graded return-to-exercise plan built around the mother’s own goals rather than a generic protocol. Several households extend the appointment into a broader standing women’s health appointment — ongoing pelvic health, prenatal preparation for a subsequent pregnancy, and general musculoskeletal care for the principal once the immediate post-natal period has passed.
Some households prefer a female clinician for this appointment specifically; that preference is stated at brief stage, not assumed. See our live example: Women’s Health & Post-Natal Physiotherapist — Private Family, Dubai.
Deployment model: live-in, often fixed-term
Every appointment we place is live-in and single-status. Most women’s health appointments are structured as a live-in fixed-term engagement of three to nine months covering the acute post-natal period, and are often extended as a standing live-in appointment once the intensive phase of recovery is complete. A smaller number are folded into an existing live-in nursing or physiotherapy appointment where the household already has a live-in clinician. For the full picture of how private families structure appointments around a principal’s needs, see the five deployment models private families use for their clinicians.
| Element | What a typical Gulf mandate looks like |
|---|---|
| Engagement length | 3–9 months fixed-term and live-in for the acute phase, often extended as a standing live-in appointment |
| Clinical scope | Pelvic floor rehabilitation, diastasis recti management, caesarean scar mobility, graded return to activity |
| Setting | Private residence, dedicated treatment room; occasionally alongside an existing nursing appointment |
| Indicative package | £75,000–£100,000 tax-free per annum, pro-rated for fixed-term engagements |
| Local arrangements | Handled by the family’s own office and advisers |
Verification and a narrower candidate pool
Women’s health physiotherapy is appointed in the Gulf as physiotherapy. What narrows the pool is clinical experience: households want a candidate who can demonstrate genuine post-natal and pelvic health caseload history, not a general MSK physiotherapist extending into the specialism for the first time. We verify registration with the HCPC, CORU or the equivalent European regulator, references and caseload history at source before any introduction. Medical Staff Talent introduces and verifies clinicians. The engagement is contracted directly between the family and the clinician, and all local arrangements (visa, licensed entity, coordination with local clinics) remain with the family’s own office and advisers.
Why demand is building now
Two things are driving this specifically toward a dedicated appointment rather than an ad hoc arrangement. First, the same households appointing dedicated maternity nurses and neonatal specialists are applying the same standard to the mother’s own recovery — continuity of one trusted clinician, not a rotating cast of visiting practitioners. Second, principals who maintain an active or athletic lifestyle are unwilling to accept a slow, informal return to fitness after childbirth, and want a structured, supervised programme from week one.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a nursing role or a physiotherapy role?
Physiotherapy. The maternity nurse manages the newborn; the women’s health physiotherapist manages the mother’s own physical recovery. Households sometimes retain both simultaneously.
Do candidates need a specific pelvic health certification?
There is no single mandatory certification, but households and Medical Staff Talent both expect demonstrable pelvic health and post-natal caseload experience, and postgraduate training in this area strengthens a file considerably.
Are these permanent appointments?
Most begin as a live-in fixed-term engagement of three to nine months covering the acute post-natal period. A meaningful proportion are extended into a standing live-in appointment once that phase is complete.
Which markets are currently hiring for this specialism?
Our current live mandate is in Dubai; Riyadh, Jeddah and Doha households are increasingly requesting the same specialism at brief stage, and we expect further mandates to open through the remainder of 2026. For Red Sea coast openings, see our physiotherapy jobs in Jeddah.
