Riyadh is now the Gulf’s highest-paying market for Western-trained consultants
The Kingdom’s capital has moved from being the market clinicians considered third, after Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to the one that pays most and gives most away. Our live consultant mandates in Riyadh currently run from £260,000 to £395,000 per annum, tax-free and paid net — bands that no longer sit below the Emirates and in the senior brackets now sit above them.
That shift is structural, not cyclical. Vision 2030 moved delivery of care towards corporatised and privately operated models, and the private groups competing for that volume are competing for the same small pool of Western-trained consultants. Price follows scarcity.
What a Riyadh consultant appointment actually offers
Procurement input. This is the argument that moves British and Irish consultants more reliably than salary. Several of our Riyadh mandates carry direct influence over what the theatre carries — a conversation almost no NHS or HSE consultant has had in a decade.
Clinical autonomy without committee latency. Private groups in the Kingdom are structurally flatter than the systems our candidates leave. Decisions that take three sittings in a UK trust take one.
Sovereign and royal-adjacent work. A meaningful share of Riyadh demand is not hospital demand at all. Royal Health Bureau appointments, sovereign estate mandates and household deployments sit alongside the private hospital market, and they pay at the top of the range because continuity and discretion are priced.
The consultants who thrive in Riyadh are not the ones chasing the number. They are the ones who wanted a service to run their way and finally found somewhere that lets them.
The regulator and the timeline
Every appointment runs through the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), with primary source verification through DataFlow.
| Phase | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| DataFlow primary source verification | 4–8 weeks |
| SCFHS classification and file assessment | 2–4 weeks |
| Examination or evaluation, where applicable | 2–5 weeks |
| Licence issue, visa and mobilisation | 2–4 weeks |
Your classification group determines the grade you are licensed at, and it depends on where you trained. Clinicians trained in the UK, Ireland, France, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand typically require three years’ post-certification specialist practice to reach consultant grade; several other Western jurisdictions require five. Establish your own position in under a minute using the GCC Licensing Classifier.
We run verification in parallel with search as standard. Sequenced that way, offer-to-start compresses by six to ten weeks against the conventional approach of starting licensing after signature — which is where most counter-offers are lost.

What the package leaves you with
A tax-free figure is not the same as a net position. Housing, schooling, medical cover and indemnity are absorbed in most Gulf packages and paid from taxed income in the UK — which is why the honest comparison is not salary against salary. Model your own position with the UK vs GCC Net Position Calculator.
Relocating with family adds a separate set of questions. Schooling, spousal employment and district choice decide more of these appointments than remuneration does; the Gulf Family Relocation Brief covers them directly.
Register confidentially
Senior consultants rarely apply. They enquire, quietly, and want to know what exists before anyone knows they looked. That is how we work.
