Almost every published figure for a consultant salary in Saudi Arabia describes hospital employment: a grade on an institutional scale, a housing allowance set by policy, a rota shared with a department. That is a real market, and it is not the one this page describes. Medical Staff Talent introduces UK & European-trained consultants and physicians to private families only — a principal, a family or the family’s private medical office — and the packages those households pay are structured, and priced, differently. The figures below are the salary Medical Staff Talent publishes for its private family physician appointments in Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province in 2026. They are stated in pounds sterling, gross, and they are reviewed periodically. For how households search for these consultants in the first place, see Recruiting Consultants for Private Families in Saudi Arabia.

Across the whole of our physician practice — Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar together — physician appointments are offered at £218,000 gross, with free accommodation, flights and travel paid, and medical insurance covered (professional indemnity insurance is not included). The salary is agreed directly between the family and the clinician; each clinician should take advice from their own tax adviser on whether the income is taxable in their circumstances.
The number a household states is the base salary. The package is the base salary plus everything the household provides in kind — and in a private family appointment the in-kind element is usually worth more than a UK consultant expects.
What sits behind the number: the anatomy of a household package
A consultant salary in Saudi Arabia quoted by a hospital is a salary. A consultant package offered by a private family is a package built from several parts, each of which is agreed in writing before an offer is made. A typical structure is:
- Base salary, gross, paid into the bank account the clinician specifies.
- Accommodation: furnished private quarters within the household’s residence or compound, provided free of charge by the household. Every appointment is live-in and single-status: the physician relocates alone.
- Medical insurance: the family covers the physician’s medical (health) insurance. Professional indemnity insurance is not included in the package: the physician arranges their own cover and checks its territory, limits and run-off provision before signing.
- Travel with the family: once in post the physician travels with the family; flights and travel are always paid for by the family.
- Annual leave: a permanent appointment with annual leave; time off, days off and holidays are set around each family’s needs.
- A defined travel and on-call structure: 24/7 availability and a six-day week are normal in the Gulf, so the household and the physician agree in advance how often the physician accompanies the principal and how days off are protected.
Because the principal is the sole patient, the scope of the appointment — availability, travel, the boundary between the physician’s practice and the household’s other clinical staff — is agreed before the offer, not discovered after arrival. Our note on clinical boundaries in private Gulf households explains what that conversation should cover.
Why household appointments pay above institutional grades
Three things price a household appointment above a hospital consultant grade, and none of them is generosity. The first is exclusivity: the physician is appointed for one principal and one family, so the household is buying the whole of a consultant’s clinical attention rather than a share of a department’s. The second is availability: a household physician adapts their schedule to the family’s and is reachable whenever the principal needs medicine. The third is judgement without institutional back-up: a family’s private medical office may be fully staffed, but a family physician in residence makes decisions alone, and households pay for the temperament that can carry that.
What household appointments do not pay for is throughput. There is no list, no clinic target and no procedural volume. A consultant whose earning model in the UK depended on private practice volume should read the figure above as a fixed salary for a defined scope, and price the loss of that volume honestly.
A gross salary — and your own tax position
The figure on this page is a gross salary, agreed directly with the family and paid into the bank account of your choice. The salary is agreed directly between the family and the clinician; each clinician should take advice from their own tax adviser on whether the income is taxable in their circumstances.
That advice matters most where you are leaving from. A UK-resident consultant who takes a household appointment needs advice on UK tax residence, and the timing of departure and the NHS pension need handling before the first salary payment. Use our UK & European vs GCC Gross Package Calculator and the Gulf Package Estimator to compare an offer with your current position, then confirm the result with your adviser. Our guide to reading the real numbers of a Gulf salary walks through the comparison.
How the permanent, travelling model shapes the appointment
Every appointment is a permanent, live-in appointment with the family, with annual leave, and single-status, and the salary is the same £218,000. The appointment sits within the residence, often attached to the family’s private medical office, and once in post the physician travels continuously with the family across the GCC, Europe and beyond, which asks for continuity and availability as well as expertise. Before you compare two Saudi offers, read our guide to the permanent, live-in model private families use for their clinicians and check each offer against it.
Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province: what differs
Riyadh carries the widest range of specialties: families’ private medical offices with staffed suites, where specialist consultants, longevity physicians and paediatricians are appointed full-time and live-in. Our separate guide to consultant salaries in Riyadh looks at the capital by role. In Jeddah, a typical appointment is a senior consultant in internal medicine leading the principal’s long-term preventive and chronic care. In the Eastern Province, appointments are made through the family’s private office, typically for the principal’s programme and travel. In every city the package and the salary are the same; what changes is the scope of the appointment. Our city registers for Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province carry the live roles.
Verification and where our role ends
Before any introduction, we verify the physician’s registration and good standing with the home regulator, references and clinical history at source. Medical Staff Talent introduces and verifies clinicians. The engagement is contracted directly between the family and the clinician, and all local arrangements (visa, licensed entity, coordination with local clinics) remain with the family’s own office and advisers.
Reading a Saudi offer: five checks before you compare it with anything
- Currency. The sterling figures on this page are the reference; agree the currency and reference rate of payment at signature.
- Accommodation. Quarters within the residence or on the estate; who furnishes, who maintains, and what happens to them during leave.
- Travel and on-call. Days per year with the principal, response time in residence, and how days off are protected.
- Contract basis. The engagement is agreed directly with the family at a gross salary; confirm how and where payment is made, the annual renewal, and the position on early termination by either side.
- Leave. How annual leave and days off are scheduled around the family’s calendar, and how they are confirmed in writing.
Nurses and physiotherapists: the parallel bands
The same households appoint nurses and physiotherapists on the same live-in structure at different bands: household physiotherapy and osteopathy appointments start from £60,000 a year gross, depending on experience, across Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, while private duty and private family nursing appointments start from €5,000 a month. In both, accommodation is free, medical insurance is covered, flights and travel are always paid for by the family, and professional indemnity insurance is not included. Nurses are always appointed in pairs — two nurses alternating 8- or 12-hour shifts, under strict NDA. Our nursing salary benchmarks and physiotherapy salary benchmarks set out the typical indicative range by setting, and our guide to private physician pay in the Gulf in 2026 places the Saudi figures against the UAE and Qatar.
