Physician Riyadh Relocation Strategic Checklist

UK Consultant Riyadh: 7 Quiet Checks Before You Leave the NHS

A CCT places you in the fastest classification group Saudi Arabia operates — two years ahead of a German or Spanish equivalent. But the threshold is counted in post-certification years, and most UK consultants never check theirs before negotiating.

British consultants are the single most recruited cohort in Saudi private healthcare, and they arrive with an advantage most of them never learn they hold.

A UK CCT places you in the fastest classification group the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties operates — two full years ahead of a German, Italian or Spanish specialist of equivalent standing.

That advantage is not automatic, it is not permanent, and it is routinely surrendered in the offer conversation by consultants who did not know it existed. These are the seven checks to complete before you resign.

1. Understand what Group 1 is actually worth

SCFHS classifies specialty qualifications by country of credential. British CCT and CCST qualifications sit in Group 1, alongside the French DES/DESC.

GroupPost-certification experience to consultantQualifications reported
Group 13 yearsUK (CCT / CCST), France (DES / DESC)
Group 25 yearsGermany, Italy, Spain

Two years of seniority is the difference between arriving as a consultant and arriving as a specialist — with the title, privileges and package that follow from each. It is the most valuable thing your CCT does for you in Saudi Arabia, and it is invisible on a job advertisement.

The wider architecture is set out in our guide to how DHA and SCFHS classify European qualifications.

2. Count your post-CCT years before anyone asks

Three years is a threshold, not a guideline. A consultant at two years and nine months post-CCT and a consultant at three years and one month are, to the Commission, in different categories.

If you are close to the line, the timing of your application is a strategic variable — not an administrative one. Waiting a quarter can be worth more than negotiating a quarter harder.

3. Settle classification before you discuss money

In the Gulf, title drives package. In Saudi Arabia, classification drives title.

A negotiation that begins with a salary figure and works backwards to a title is a negotiation conducted in the wrong order. Establish where the Commission will classify you, then let the package follow. Households that are serious will already have modelled this; those who resist the question are telling you something.

The failure mode has a name and a cost — we set it out in GCC Consultant Licensing: 7 Critical Rules to Avoid a Costly Specialist Downgrade.

4. Time your GMC good standing certificate

Your Certificate of Good Standing from the General Medical Council has a validity window, and Gulf regulators take their own view of how recent it must be.

Consultants routinely request it early, feel organised, then spend four months in Primary Source Verification and contract negotiation — and submit a certificate that has aged out. The application does not fail. It simply pauses, waiting for a document that now has to be requested from Riyadh rather than from home.

Request it when your dossier is otherwise complete.

5. Establish whether your specialty routes through an examination

SCFHS routes certain specialties through a Prometric licensing examination, which carries its own scheduling lead time on top of DataFlow verification.

Whether your specialty is affected is knowable before you accept. Discovering it afterwards compresses an already tight mobilisation timeline and is a common reason a start date slips by a quarter.

6. Decide the NHS pension question before you resign — not after you land

This is the check with the longest financial tail and the shortest window.

Whether to preserve, continue voluntary contributions to, or step away from an NHS Pension is a decision with consequences measured in decades. It is materially easier to execute while you are still employed, still resident, and still inside the UK system.

The decision should be made before resignation, not after arrival. Almost nobody does it in that order.

We set out how a tax-free Saudi package converts into genuine liquid wealth — and what needs structuring from day one — in Tax-Free Wealth Preservation in the Gulf. This is a matter for independent, qualified advice; we are an executive search firm, not financial advisers.

7. Know how you will keep the licence you are about to earn

Saudi classification is renewed through the Mumaris Plus platform, and renewal is conditional on continuing professional development that is entirely your responsibility to track.

UK consultants arriving from an appraisal-and-revalidation culture frequently assume the two systems are interchangeable. They are not, and the first renewal arrives sooner than expected. See our guide to GCC CPD requirements and licence renewal.

Why Riyadh, specifically

Dubai is the more familiar destination and the easier first move. Riyadh is where the scale is.

Vision 2030 has driven a concentration of capital into private healthcare infrastructure that has no equivalent elsewhere in the region — new specialist towers, comprehensive cancer centres, robotic surgery programmes and executive health platforms — and the private families who draw on that infrastructure expect the same calibre of clinical leadership inside their own residences.

For a consultant with the appetite to build rather than to join, that is a materially different proposition from a well-run Dubai clinic. It is also a market where private family mandates are more numerous and more discreet.

For the household’s side of the same decision, see our Private Family and family office medical staffing hub.

The consultant who moves well

The British consultants who mobilise into Riyadh cleanly are not the ones who negotiated hardest. They are the ones who knew their classification before the first conversation, timed their documents to the process rather than to their impatience, and settled the pension question while they still had a UK payroll.

None of that is difficult. All of it is easier to do before you resign than after.

Medical Staff Talent exclusively sources UK & European Trained Doctors, Physiotherapists, and Nurses for Private Families across Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar — and on Mediterranean yachts when travelling with the family. For the wider regulatory picture, see our Gulf licensing reference guides.

Medical Staff Talent introduces and verifies clinicians. The engagement is contracted directly between the family and the clinician, and all local arrangements (visa, licensed entity, coordination with local clinics) remain with the family’s own office and advisers. UK consultants considering Riyadh can send us their CV for confidential consideration.

Classification rules and examination requirements are set by the Commission and change. Confirm your specific position with SCFHS before making binding career or contractual decisions. This guide summarises publicly available information from the regulators for general reference. It is not legal advice, and Medical Staff Talent does not advise on licensing, visas or local regulation.
