What this appointment asks of you
An institutional appointment: the consultant commands the household’s in-house clinical infrastructure, holds unconstrained procurement authority over equipment, diagnostics and therapeutics, and is accountable for operational readiness within the residence. Medicine is the foundation, but the job is also governance — protocols, staffing, supplier relationships, audit, and the medical diplomacy of advising principals and their offices at the highest level. Internal or emergency medicine certification with substantive consultant experience in a major UK or European network is the requirement; what distinguishes the successful candidate is cross-cultural judgement, psychological resilience and the ability to build and run a small, superb clinical operation under the strictest confidentiality.
Licensing sequence: DOH, Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi licenses clinicians through the Department of Health (DOH) via the TAMM platform. For a residential appointment the sequence is:
- DataFlow primary source verification of your primary medical degree, specialist certification (CCT, CCST, Facharzt or the equivalent European fellowship), current registration, certificate of good standing and experience letters — typically four to eight weeks with a complete dossier.
- DOH evaluation of qualifications and experience: Tier-1 specialist certification generally exempts you from the DOH assessment, and consultant-grade eligibility follows the verified CV.
- Licence issuance under the licensed private medical entity associated with the household, followed by the residence visa and Emirates ID.
- Household onboarding: NDA execution, accommodation, banking and the practical steps we coordinate with the family office before your first day.
With a complete dossier on day one we usually see DOH eligibility inside eight to twelve weeks. Our DOH licensing guide sets out each stage, licensing for private residences explains how a household appointment is sponsored, and rejections, discrepancies and appeals covers what happens when a document does not match. GMC specialist registration and European medical qualifications cover the physician-specific checks.
How the package is structured
The figure quoted above — £260,000 – £390,000 per annum — is base remuneration, and it is paid tax-free: the UAE levies no personal income tax on employment earnings, so the number on the offer is the number that arrives.
Accommodation, transport, medical cover and repatriation flights sit outside the base figure, and global malpractice indemnity is provided by the household in the mandates we run — we ask every physician to check the territory, the limits and the run-off cover before signing, and our note on malpractice insurance in the Gulf explains what to look for.
End-of-service gratuity accrues under local labour law for each completed year and is paid when the contract ends; our note on end-of-service gratuity and repatriation explains how it is calculated and what to check in the contract.
If you are leaving the UK part-way through a tax year, split-year treatment under the Statutory Residence Test usually applies; keep a day-count from the date you leave and take advice from a cross-border adviser — we point every candidate to one, and tax-free wealth preservation for Gulf clinicians sets out the planning points.
Run your own comparison with the UK versus GCC net position calculator or the Gulf net package estimator; we are happy to walk through the result with you before any interview.
Living in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the federal capital and the quieter of the two Emirati cities: island neighbourhoods, a long Corniche, Saadiyat’s museums and beaches, Yas Island’s sport and entertainment, and a residential market that favours villas and calm. Household appointments include accommodation provided by the family — within the compound or a residence nearby — so relocation is about settling rather than searching.
Winters are mild and outdoor; summers are hot. Abu Dhabi International flies direct to London and the European hubs, and Dubai is little more than an hour by road. Families have a strong choice of British and American curriculum schools — the Abu Dhabi districts and schools guide covers districts and catchments, our international school fees benchmark gives current fees — and the cultural adjustment guide covers the adjustments worth anticipating.
What happens when you apply
The household has retained us exclusively, which shapes how the search runs: there is no agency panel and no CV database. Vanessa, our Executive Search Lead, holds a confidential briefing call with every candidate we take forward — the appointment in detail, the household’s expectations, the licensing route and the life around the post — before anything is committed to paper.
From there the sequence is fixed: dossier and licensing check, an anonymised profile to the family office with your written authorisation, video interviews, an in-person meeting arranged by the household, then offer, NDA and contract before licensing fees are incurred. The time-to-hire estimator shows what each stage takes for a physician appointment; confidential hiring process and confidentiality, NDA and vetting explain the household’s side.
