Doctor Jobs Aboard Private Superyachts in the Mediterranean: The 2026 Guide for UK & European-Trained Physicians

Superyacht medicine is no longer a niche curiosity within Gulf-linked private healthcare recruitment. It is now one of the largest single categories of physician mandate we run, as private families who winter in the Gulf increasingly spend their summers cruising the Mediterranean — and want the same calibre of clinical continuity at sea that they have on land.

A private yacht doctor is not a ship’s medic. It is a board-certified consultant given full clinical autonomy over a purpose-equipped medical suite, for one family, with no colleague down the corridor to consult.

Why this category has grown so quickly

The same private families we place physicians, nurses and physiotherapists with in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha frequently relocate to the Mediterranean for several months each year. Rather than break clinical continuity, they commission a dedicated onboard physician for the season — the same clinician who leads their residential care team, because every appointment is permanent and travels with the family. Either way, demand for this category has scaled materially faster than most other physician mandates on our current desk. Residential appointments in Qatar are listed on our doctor jobs in Doha page.

What the role actually involves

Sole clinical responsibility at sea. The physician carries full autonomy over a purpose-equipped onboard medical suite, making independent clinical decisions with specialist coordination ashore as required — there is no second opinion two doors down. When the family travels, the physician keeps their UK or European registration; coordination with local clinics is arranged by the family’s own office and advisers.

Mediterranean routing with the family. The season typically runs the classic summer circuit — the French and Italian Rivieras, the Balearics, the Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands — with itineraries set by the family rather than a fixed rota.

Coordination with the shore-based team. Several of our yacht mandates sit alongside a residential Gulf appointment for the same family, with a private nurse and physiotherapist as part of the wider care structure. A hybrid brief along these lines is set out in our Private Doctor to a Private Family’s Principal listing, which combines Gulf residential care with Mediterranean travel across the same appointment.

What the package looks like

Mandate typePackageNotes
Permanent family physician aboard through the Mediterranean season, full clinical autonomy£218,000 grossFree private onboard cabin, flights and travel paid, medical insurance covered (professional indemnity not included), annual leave
Hybrid Gulf residence + Mediterranean travel£218,000 grossFree live-in accommodation within the residence, medical insurance covered (professional indemnity not included), permanent full-time contract

Both structures pay £218,000 a year, gross, with free accommodation, flights and travel paid, and medical insurance covered (professional indemnity insurance is not included). The salary is agreed directly between the family and the clinician; each clinician should take advice from their own tax adviser on whether the income is taxable in their circumstances. Who is shortlisted for this category

Board-certified physicians with seven or more years of post-fellowship or general practice experience, trained and licensed in the UK or an accepted European jurisdiction — reflecting our widened pool this year, spanning Western, Northern, Southern and Central Europe. Registration and good standing are verified at source with the home regulator before any introduction. Prior yacht, remote-medicine or expedition experience is an advantage, though not a requirement — composure operating independently, without a colleague to consult, matters more than a specific prior posting.

What most candidates get wrong before applying

The two most common misconceptions are assuming the role is a short posting, like a cruise-ship medical officer post, and underestimating the discretion required. Neither is accurate. These are permanent, full-time appointments to a single family, governed by NDA from first contact — the family and vessel are never identified publicly at any stage, before, during or after a mandate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a yacht doctor role the same as a cruise ship medical officer position?

No. A private yacht physician holds a permanent, full clinical autonomy appointment to a single family or Principal, not a short posting serving passengers on a commercial vessel.

What qualifications are required for a private yacht doctor mandate?

Board certification with seven or more years of post-fellowship experience, training and licensing in an accepted UK or European system, and fluent English. Prior remote-medicine experience is an advantage but not mandatory.

Is the yacht owner or family ever identified during recruitment?

No. The family and vessel are never identified until mutual interest is established, and confidentiality continues after the appointment ends.

Do these mandates combine Gulf and Mediterranean work?

Several do. A number of our clients maintain residential care in the Gulf during the winter and travel to the Mediterranean by yacht in summer, with the same physician covering both.
