What this appointment asks of you

An acute-readiness post at senior consultant level. The physician commands a private suite carrying emergency, resuscitative and diagnostic infrastructure, provisioned continuously at the peak of current practice, and holds responsibility for immediate intervention and diagnostic staging under diplomatic protocol. The volume is low; the stakes and the expectation of perfect preparedness are not. Complex medical logistics — cross-border transfers, specialist retrieval, coordination with tertiary centres in the Kingdom and abroad — form a substantial part of the remit, and the household expects the consultant to design and rehearse them. Seven years post-consultancy in a leading teaching hospital or private family medical unit is the threshold; mastery of discretion and protocol is assumed.

Licensing sequence: SCFHS, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia licenses clinicians through the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) on the Mumaris Plus platform. For a residential appointment the sequence runs as follows:

  • DataFlow primary source verification of your primary medical degree, specialist certification (CCT, CCST, Facharzt or the equivalent European fellowship), current registration, certificate of good standing and experience letters — typically four to eight weeks when the dossier is complete on submission.
  • SCFHS professional classification, which sets your title and grade; Tier-1 specialist certification normally classifies at Consultant grade, which removes the assessment requirement for most physicians.
  • Professional registration and licence issuance, followed by the work visa, the medical fitness examination and the iqama (residency permit) on arrival.
  • Household onboarding: NDA execution, accommodation, banking and the practical steps we coordinate with the family office before your first day.

With a complete dossier on day one we usually see SCFHS eligibility inside ten to fourteen weeks; the visa and residency stage then runs in parallel with relocation planning. Our notes on SCFHS and Mumaris Plus in 2026 and on the DataFlow workflow set out what to prepare, and good-standing certificates explains the one document that most often delays a file. Consultants should also read Saudi medical licensing for consultants.

How the package is structured

The figure quoted above — £310,000 – £395,000 per annum — is base remuneration, and it is paid tax-free: Saudi Arabia levies no personal income tax on employment earnings, so the number on the offer is the number that arrives.

Accommodation, transport, medical cover and repatriation flights sit outside the base figure, and global malpractice indemnity is provided by the household in the mandates we run — we ask every physician to check the territory, the limits and the run-off cover before signing, and our note on malpractice insurance in the Gulf explains what to look for.

End-of-service gratuity accrues under local labour law for each completed year and is paid when the contract ends; our note on end-of-service gratuity and repatriation explains how it is calculated and what to check in the contract.

If you are leaving the UK part-way through a tax year, split-year treatment under the Statutory Residence Test usually applies; keep a day-count from the date you leave and take advice from a cross-border adviser — we point every candidate to one, and tax-free wealth preservation for Gulf clinicians sets out the planning points.

Run your own comparison with the UK versus GCC net position calculator or the Gulf net package estimator; we are happy to walk through the result with you before any interview.

Living in the Eastern Province

The Eastern Province — Al Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran — is the Kingdom’s Gulf coast and home to its longest-established international community, built around the energy sector over decades. The result is a settled expatriate infrastructure: mature compounds, international schools, a Corniche, and the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain for weekends. Household appointments include accommodation provided by the family, usually within a secure compound.

Winters are mild; summers are hot and humid. King Fahd International Airport connects to London and the European hubs, and Riyadh is a short flight or a comfortable drive. Our Gulf family relocation brief explains schooling and spousal employment, the international school fees benchmark gives current fees, and the cultural adjustment guide covers the adjustments worth anticipating.

How the search is run

We run this search as a full-cycle search under a retained, confidential mandate. The first conversation is with Vanessa, our Executive Search Lead, and it is a briefing rather than a screening: what the appointment involves day to day, what the household selects for, and whether it fits the life you want. Your CV goes nowhere until you say so.

If you proceed, your dossier is checked against the licensing route above, the household is briefed on an anonymised profile, and interviews run by video before an in-person meeting arranged by the family. Offer, NDA and contract are settled before any licensing fee is incurred. The time-to-hire estimator gives realistic timings for a physician appointment; confidential hiring process and confidentiality, NDA and vetting explain the household’s side of the process.
